Self Reporting of B.C.'s Core Competencies & Mobile Devices
Mobile devices have many of the same capabilities as a traditional desktop computer, but they provide one thing that traditional computers can not-mobility with communication. Not only can M-Learning provide an opportunity to deliver learning in an anywhere anytime basis, but communication between stakeholders can be virtually seamless.
Given the built in applications that they average smartphone has, mobile devices can not only be used to create evidence of learning but also share that evidence.
Currently, schools in British Columbia are devising ways in which students can self-report attainment of the Core Competencies. Following are exemplars of how mobile devices can be used along with Google forms to evidence and report Core Competencies. Following is a link to the Google form exampled along with a PDF copy version for download.

THE TRADITIONAL LAB ACTIVITY: To collaboratively create a physical circuit given specific parameters in a physical lab setting.
During this activity, a traditional Science lab where students create a simple electrical circuit was used to evidence the attainment of the Core Competencies of Critical Thinking - Collaborate to plan, carry out, and review constructions and activities.
The mobile device's camera was used to record evidence of the lab activity; in this case students took a photo. They were then able to self-report using their mobile device to access the Google form designed to support self-reporting of Core Competencies.
The student then completed and submitted the Google form (Internet communication) which was designed to support the self-reporting of the specific Core Competency.

THE M-LEARNING ACTIVITY: To create a circuit given specific parameters using the DC Circuit Construction Kit application.
During this activity, a mobile device was used to access a simulator application that allowed students to create a simple electrical circuit AND to complete the Google Form, evidencing the attainment of a Core Competency of Critical Thinking - Collaborate to plan, carry out, and review constructions and activities.

THE STUDENTS SELF-REPORT:
The teacher, as creator or owner of the form, will receive an electronic copy of each completed form. The responses of each form can also be auto-collated into a spreadsheet. This spreadsheet allows the teacher to quickly review responses and search response content and respondents as well as share responses with specific stakeholders.
Recipients of the report can be expanded beyond the teacher or owner of the form. Running various scripts with Google forms allows recipients to vary depending on responses and the responder.
Scripts are available online for various functions. The following link clearly shows the steps required to insert such a script.
